HEARTWOOD CURRICULUMS

|
Heartwood's curriculums for pre-K and elementary children are multicultural, literature-based and highly evaluated. Heartwood offers an effective, teacher-friendly way to teach children universal ethical concepts and support families in guiding children's choices.
Heartwood is based on seven universal ethical values: Courage, Loyalty, Justice, Respect, Hope, Honesty and Love. Evaluation research shows that kids understand and recognize these seven attributes after only a year of the curriculum. They can use this basic framework or ethical language in discussions, in writing, in making decisions and in solving conflicts. After four years of Heartwood, students are more caring and respectful and they say their teachers are too.
Using the power of stories is an age-old way to teach ethics. Read aloud, the beautiful Heartwood books nurture children and reach them on an emotional level. Caring classrooms result from building relationships between students and teachers, but that's not always easy.
In the discussions following Heartwood stories, teachers and children share what really matters to them, such as how they have shown courage or honesty in their lives. Activities build interactions with families and communities that are truly meaningful.
Heartwood was created by teachers for teachers, with respect for how much they are already doing. It is easily infused into literacy instruction and other areas of the curriculum, helping teachers meet standards instead of adding to their burdens.
What is your school doing to counteract violence, in the school, in the news, in the media? Adopting ethics education is proactive and preventive-and it shows the kids we care!
